Service overview
What hip & ridge tiles involves, and why it matters
What it is
Ridge tiles run along the top of the roof. Hip tiles cover the sloping external corners. Both are traditionally bedded in mortar, which weakens over time. We rebed, repoint and replace them so they are secure and watertight.
Who it's for
Homeowners with a leak near the top of the roof, crumbling mortar on the ridge, ridge tiles that have moved or fallen, or a survey noting defective ridge and hip work.
When you need it
Act when you see mortar in the gutter or on the ground, gaps under ridge tiles, rocking or missing ridge tiles, or a damp patch high up in the loft or top-floor ceiling.
Why use a professional roofer
Ridge tiles are heavy and sit at the highest, most exposed point of the roof. If one falls it can injure someone or damage property. Several of our customers came to us with leaks caused by ridge tiles, and we fixed the cause properly.
The cost of waiting
What happens if you leave it
Ridge and hip mortar is constantly exposed to sun, frost and wind. Once it cracks, deterioration speeds up.
Leaks into the loft
Water gets in under loose ridge tiles and runs down the inside of the roof, often showing up as damp in a top-floor room.
Falling tiles
A loose ridge tile can be lifted by strong wind and fall, which is a serious risk to people, cars and conservatories below.
Wind damage spreads
Once wind can get under the ridge, it starts to lift the top courses of tiles too.
Insurance issues
Insurers may question claims where damage results from long-term lack of maintenance.
Common mistakes homeowners make
- Pointing over loose tiles without rebedding them
- Using the wrong mortar mix that cracks quickly
- Ignoring mortar in the gutters
- Not checking the hips when the ridge is repaired

In detail
Materials and methods to discuss
These are general roofing considerations, not a confirmed specification for every job. Materials, matching, access and installation details need to be agreed with Billy for your roof.
There are a few different ways to secure ridge and hip tiles, and the best choice depends on your roof.
Traditional mortar rebedding
The traditional method sets ridge and hip tiles on a bed of mortar. Done properly with a correct mix, it gives a classic look that suits period properties.
Repointing
Where tiles are still firmly bedded but the joints have weathered, repointing restores the seal without lifting every tile.
Dry ridge and dry hip systems
Mechanically fixed systems clip and screw ridge and hip tiles in place, so they do not rely on mortar. See our dry ridge systems page for more detail.
Replacing damaged ridge tiles
Cracked ridge tiles are replaced with matching profiles so the ridge looks consistent.
Slate and tile roofs
We work on ridges and hips on both slate and tiled roofs across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Hertfordshire.
Getting hip & ridge tiles right
Ridge and hip mortar takes a beating. It is exposed on both faces, dries out in summer, and freezes and thaws in winter. Over the years the bond between mortar and tile weakens. At first you might see hairline cracks, then small pieces of mortar in the gutter, and finally ridge tiles that can be lifted by hand.
The right fix depends on the condition of the tiles and the bed underneath. If only the joints have weathered, repointing may be enough. If the bed has failed, the tiles need lifting and rebedding. On some roofs a dry ridge system is the better long-term answer. We explain the options with photos so you can choose with confidence.
Because ridges sit at the very top of the roof, an assessment may also include the top courses of tiles, the ridge batten if present, and any hips running down from the ridge, so the whole top of the roof is secure.

"I was impressed by the two man team who looked at the roof edge and chimney problem and assessed what action was needed. They did not try and sell me a new roof or new chimney but were very honest and efficient. A price was quoted and a date set. They turned up on time and cleaned up after them and I paid the quoted price. They were also helpful and engaging. I would heartily recommend them. They did a good job.…"
