Service overview
What fascias, soffits & guttering involves, and why it matters
What it is
Fascias are the boards along the roof edge that carry the gutters. Soffits close off the underside of the eaves. Guttering collects rainwater and carries it to the downpipes. Together they protect the bottom of your roof and the top of your walls.
Who it's for
Homeowners with rotting or flaking timber boards, sagging or leaking gutters, water staining on brickwork, or birds and pests getting into the eaves.
When you need it
Look out for peeling paint and soft timber, gutters overflowing in heavy rain, joints dripping, gutters pulling away from the fascia, or green staining down the walls.
Why use a professional roofer
The roof edge is where tiles, felt, fascia and gutters meet. Replacing boards without checking the bottom course of tiles and the felt underneath can leave a hidden leak. As roofers, we look at the whole edge.
The cost of waiting
What happens if you leave it
Water that overflows or leaks from the roof edge goes straight into your walls and foundations.
Damp walls
Overflowing gutters soak brickwork and can lead to damp patches and mould inside.
Rotting roof timbers
Rotten fascias let water reach rafter ends and the bottom of the roof structure.
Pests in the eaves
Gaps in soffits let birds, wasps and rodents into the roof space.
Ground and path damage
Water pouring off the roof edge can erode paths and splash up walls.
Common mistakes homeowners make
- Painting over rotten timber
- Fitting new gutters to failing fascia boards
- Ignoring a dripping joint
- Not checking the felt and tiles at the eaves

Benefits and considerations
Results depend on the roof condition, specification and work agreed. Customer feedback describes individual jobs, not a guarantee of the same outcome. Ask for the scope and applicable guarantee terms in your quote.
Drier walls
Water is carried away from brickwork rather than down it.
Protected roof edge
Sound boards protect rafter ends and the bottom of the roof.
Smarter house
A clean, straight roofline improves kerb appeal.
Fewer pests
Sealed soffits keep birds and insects out of the eaves.
Roofers, not just installers
We check the tiles and felt at the eaves at the same time.
Clean finish
One customer was delighted we jet washed his fascias as part of the job.
In detail
Materials and methods to discuss
These are general roofing considerations, not a confirmed specification for every job. Materials, matching, access and installation details need to be agreed with Billy for your roof.
Roofline work is often combined with roof repairs, re-roofing or roof cleaning to save on access costs.
Fascia boards
We replace rotten or damaged fascia boards and check the rafter ends they fix to.
Soffits
We replace soffits to close the eaves and keep pests out, maintaining ventilation where the roof needs it.
Guttering and downpipes
We replace or repair gutters and downpipes, reset falls and fix leaking joints.
Eaves details
We check the eaves felt and bottom course of tiles so water runs cleanly into the gutter.
Cleaning
Roofline cleaning removes dirt and green staining for a fresher look.
Getting fascias, soffits & guttering right
Gutters only work if they are set to the right fall and kept clear. A gutter that has dropped at one end, or that is blocked with moss, will overflow at the first heavy downpour. Over time that overflow soaks the brickwork and can find its way inside. Joints between gutter sections also perish, causing steady drips that stain walls and rot fascia boards.
Timber fascias and soffits need regular painting to stay sound. Once water gets into the grain, they soften and rot from the inside, often long before it is obvious from the ground. Replacing them gives a fresh, clean roofline and a solid fixing for your gutters.
Because we are roofers, an assessment may also include the eaves felt and the bottom row of tiles while we work on the roofline. If water is running behind the gutter instead of into it, new boards alone will not solve the problem. Fixing the eaves detail at the same time does. We carry out this work in Amersham, Chesham and across the Chilterns.
Signs your roofline needs attention are usually visible from the ground. Look for paint flaking off timber boards, dark streaks running down the brickwork beneath the gutter, gutters that visibly dip between brackets, and plants or moss growing out of the gutter line. After heavy rain, watch whether water spills over the front of the gutter rather than running to the downpipe.
If your fascias are sound and only the gutters are failing, a gutter-only replacement or repair may be all that is needed. If the boards behind are soft, we replace those first so the new gutters have a secure fixing. Discuss which option applies when requesting a quote.

"I was impressed by the two man team who looked at the roof edge and chimney problem and assessed what action was needed. They did not try and sell me a new roof or new chimney but were very honest and efficient. A price was quoted and a date set. They turned up on time and cleaned up after them and I paid the quoted price. They were also helpful and engaging. I would heartily recommend them. They did a good job.…"
