Service overview
What verge repairs & rebedding involves, and why it matters
What it is
The verge is the edge of the roof at the gable end. Verge tiles are traditionally bedded in mortar, which weathers over time.
Who it's for
Homeowners with mortar falling from the gable edge, loose verge tiles or damp at the gable wall.
When you need it
When verge mortar is cracked or missing, or edge tiles are loose.
Why use a professional roofer
Julia from HP1 had one side of a verge rebedded and told us we were honest, efficient and charged the quoted price.
The cost of waiting
What happens if you leave it
The verge takes the full force of wind driven along the gable.
Wind lift
Loose verge tiles are lifted first in storms.
Water ingress
Water gets into the gable wall and roof edge.
Falling mortar
Mortar falling from height is a hazard.
Spreading damage
Once the verge goes, tiles behind it follow.
Common mistakes homeowners make
- Pointing over loose tiles
- Using weak mortar
- Ignoring the undercloak
- Not checking the other side

In detail
Materials and methods to discuss
These are general roofing considerations, not a confirmed specification for every job. Materials, matching, access and installation details need to be agreed with Billy for your roof.
Verges can be finished in mortar or with a dry system.
Mortar rebedding
Traditional finish suited to older properties.
Dry verge
Mechanically fixed caps that don't rely on mortar.
Undercloak
We check or renew the undercloak beneath the verge.
Combined work
Often done with chimney, ridge or leadwork repairs.
Slate and tile
We work on verges on both slate and tiled roofs.
Getting verge repairs & rebedding right
The verge is the sloping edge of the roof at a gable end. On a traditional roof, the last tile on each row is bedded onto a strip of undercloak with mortar, creating a neat edge that keeps wind and rain out of the gap.
Verges are among the most exposed parts of any roof. Wind blows along and across them, and rain drives straight into the mortar. Over time the mortar cracks and falls away, often landing on paths or patios below. Once the bond goes, verge tiles become loose and can be lifted in strong winds.
Repair options include rebedding the verge on fresh mortar with a correct mix, or replacing the mortar with a dry verge system. Dry verge uses interlocking caps fixed mechanically to the battens, giving a clean, low-maintenance edge. We will explain both and recommend whichever suits your roof and the look of your property.
Verge, chimney, ridge and leadwork issues may occur together. Discuss the inspection scope and access arrangements with Billy.
Signs that your verges need attention include pieces of mortar on the ground below the gable, visible gaps between the edge tiles and the wall, tiles at the edge that look out of line, and green staining on the gable wall.
It is common for one side of a roof to fail before the other, because one gable usually faces the prevailing weather. We check both sides and quote only for what needs doing. One customer had a single side rebedded, along with chimney and leadwork repairs, and told us we were honest, efficient and charged exactly the quoted price.
Verge-repair duration depends on scope and access. Work at height requires appropriate access arrangements.

"I was impressed by the two man team who looked at the roof edge and chimney problem and assessed what action was needed.
