Service overview
What dry ridge systems involves, and why it matters
What it is
A dry ridge system fixes ridge tiles to the roof with screws, clips and a ventilated roll, instead of bedding them in mortar.
Who it's for
Homeowners with repeatedly failing ridge mortar, those having a new roof, and anyone who wants a lower-maintenance ridge.
When you need it
When ridge mortar is cracking or falling out, ridge tiles are loose, or the roof is being replaced.
Why use a professional roofer
A dry ridge has to be fitted to the right components for your tile profile. One customer in SL3 said we explained the system clearly before he decided, and the job was completed in a timely and tidy manner.
The cost of waiting
What happens if you leave it
Mortar-bedded ridges are vulnerable to weather, and repeated repointing adds up.
Cracking mortar
Frost and movement crack ridge mortar, letting water and wind in.
Loose ridge tiles
Without a sound bed, ridge tiles can be lifted and fall.
Roof leaks
Water gets in at the top of the roof and runs down inside.
Ongoing maintenance
Mortar ridges need periodic repointing.
Common mistakes homeowners make
- Using components that don't match the tile profile
- Not fixing the ridge batten securely
- Mixing dry and wet systems badly
- Ignoring hips and verges

In detail
Materials and methods to discuss
These are general roofing considerations, not a confirmed specification for every job. Materials, matching, access and installation details need to be agreed with Billy for your roof.
Dry ridge systems vary by manufacturer and tile profile.
Ridge battens and rolls
A secure batten and ventilated roll form the base.
Mechanical fixings
Each tile is screwed or clipped in place.
Dry hips and verges
Dry systems can also be used on hips and verges for consistency.
New roofs and repairs
Dry ridge suits both new roofs and ridge replacements.
Reusing ridge tiles
Sound ridge tiles can usually be cleaned and reused.
Getting dry ridge systems right
Older mortar-bedded ridges may rely on the mortar bed; other installations also use mechanical fixings. Mortar is strong when new, but sun, frost and roof movement gradually weaken it. That is why mortar ridges eventually need repointing or rebedding.
A dry ridge system replaces the mortar with a mechanical fixing. A timber ridge batten is fixed along the top of the roof on adjustable brackets. A breathable roll is laid over the batten and dressed onto the tiles either side. Each ridge tile is then screwed or clipped to the batten, with union clips at the joints to keep them aligned and sealed.
Because there is no mortar to crack, maintenance is lower. The breathable roll also allows air to move through the top of the roof, helping to reduce condensation in the loft. Dry ridge systems are now widely used on new roofs and are a common upgrade when an existing mortar ridge has failed.
Components must suit your tile profile, so we check this during the inspection and explain exactly what will be fitted before any work starts.
Dry ridge is not always the right answer. On some period properties, a traditional mortar finish suits the look of the house better, and where tiles are an unusual profile, compatible components may be limited. We weigh these points up with you during the inspection.
When fitted during a full roof replacement, dry ridge integrates with the new membrane and battens. When fitted to an existing roof, we lift the old ridge, clean off the mortar, and reuse sound ridge tiles where possible to keep the finish consistent with the rest of the roof.

"I was impressed by the two man team who looked at the roof edge and chimney problem and assessed what action was needed. They did not try and sell me a new roof or new chimney but were very honest and efficient. A price was quoted and a date set. They turned up on time and cleaned up after them and I paid the quoted price. They were also helpful and engaging. I would heartily recommend them. They did a good job.…"
