Service overview

What roof re-felting & re-battening involves, and why it matters

What it is

Re-felting and re-battening means lifting the tiles or slates, replacing the felt or membrane and battens beneath, and refitting the covering.

Who it's for

Homeowners whose tiles are in good condition but whose felt has perished, or whose battens have rotted.

When you need it

When you can see torn or sagging felt in the loft, tiles slipping because battens have failed, or damp in the roof space.

Why use a professional roofer

The felt and battens are the hidden structure of your roof covering. A customer in SL3 asked us for new roof boards and new felt; we explained the work beforehand and completed it to a high standard.

The cost of waiting

What happens if you leave it

Failed felt and battens are hidden, but they let the whole roof down.

Leaks through torn felt

Felt is the secondary barrier. Once it's gone, any slipped tile leaks.

Slipping tiles

Rotten battens can't hold nails, so tiles slide.

Condensation

Old felt doesn't breathe, trapping moisture in the loft.

Timber rot

Damp battens spread rot into the rafters.

Common mistakes homeowners make

  • Replacing tiles without checking the battens
  • Patching felt from inside the loft
  • Not ventilating the roof space
  • Ignoring sagging felt

In detail

Materials and methods to discuss

These are general roofing considerations, not a confirmed specification for every job. Materials, matching, access and installation details need to be agreed with Billy for your roof.

Re-felting can apply to the whole roof or a single section.

Breathable membranes

Modern membranes let vapour escape while keeping water out.

Treated battens

New battens at the right gauge for your tiles.

Roof boards

We replace damaged boards where needed.

Partial re-felting

Sometimes only one slope needs it.

Membrane replacement

We replaced a dry lining membrane for a customer in HP7, with updates along the way.

Getting roof re-felting & re-battening right

Beneath your tiles or slates there are two hidden layers doing important work. The battens are the horizontal timbers that the tiles hang from and are nailed to. The felt or membrane is the secondary waterproof layer that catches any rain that gets past the tiles and directs it to the gutter.

Older roofs often have bitumen felt, which becomes brittle with age and heat. It tears, sags between rafters and eventually stops doing its job. Battens can rot where water has got in, or become so weak that nails no longer hold. When either fails, the tiles may look fine from the ground while the roof is quietly letting water in.

Re-felting and re-battening involves carefully stripping the tiles, replacing both layers, and refitting the tiles. Where the existing tiles are in good condition, reusing them keeps cost down. Modern breathable membranes also let water vapour escape from the loft, reducing condensation that older felt traps.

This is often the right choice when a survey flags felt or batten problems but the tiles themselves are sound. We will tell you honestly whether re-felting will give a lasting result or whether a full replacement makes more sense.

You can often check the condition of your felt from inside the loft with a torch. Look for tears, sagging between rafters, daylight showing through, and brittle edges at the eaves. Damp or dark staining on the battens is also a warning sign.

Because re-felting involves lifting the tiles, it is also a good opportunity to renew ridges, verges and leadwork at the same time, giving you a roof that is sound from top to bottom. We will explain what is worth doing while access is in place and what can wait.

10/10 · Supplied review excerpt

"I was impressed by the two man team who looked at the roof edge and chimney problem and assessed what action was needed. They did not try and sell me a new roof or new chimney but were very honest and efficient. A price was quoted and a date set. They turned up on time and cleaned up after them and I paid the quoted price. They were also helpful and engaging. I would heartily recommend them. They did a good job.…"
